Mini Reviews (part two)

Hi everyone!

I know it’s been a while, but I am back with some more book reviews!

It Happened One Summer (Bellinger Sisters #1)

This is another great, steamy rom-com from Tessa Bailey.

I've heard that this book was inspired by the character of Alexis from 'Schitt's Creek', which I love! Piper is the ultimate L. A. party-girl, who after a night spent in jail is sent to the small fishing town of Westport to gain an appreciation for money and responsibilities. Here, she meets hot captain Brendan, who is the grumpy to her sunshine.

I really enjoyed this one - it had truly awkward scenes and was laugh out loud funny, but was also endearing and sizzling. I liked the quippy dialogue between the characters and while the inevitable relationship crisis felt really forced, it didn't detract from the story. I appreciated that both MCs supported each other and didn't try to change the other person.

Rating: 5/5

Hook, Line and Sinker (Bellinger Sisters #2)

This is a loose sequel to 'It Happened One Summer' but I don't think you need to have read it before this.

The main characters Fox and Hannah were introduced in the previous novel and it was nice to revisit them and Westport. This was a friends to lovers story with some fake dating thrown in which worked nicely, but the whole book was generally lacking ... something. I'm not really sure what exactly that something is, unfortunately, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the other Tessa Bailey books I have read.

To use an element from the book - despite them being the main characters this time, Fox and Hannah still felt more like side characters. I liked the character growth they went through but I felt like the romance was too drawn out.

Rating: 4/5

The Metamorphosis

I’m sure there was a metaphor somewhere in there, but I really just didn't get it.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch and he was really good but that's about the only thing I liked about it.

Don’t have anything else to say about this one.

Rating: 2/5

Animal Farm

I loved this book.

I think the execution is great, the characters are wonderful and everything just makes sense. I listened to the Stephen Fry narration of the audiobook and that was, unsurprisingly, also excellent.

Rating: 4/5

Fahrenheit 451

I found this book really powerful, it has made me think a lot about the importance of books and communication between people.

I am generally a fan of dystopian novels and liked the concept, I think Bradbury introduced a future that is very possible. As always with novels from this time period, I wish there had been more engaging female characters, however.

This was a fast-paced book with certain scenes having me almost literally on the edge of my seat. It's pretty short, so it can be read in a day.

Rating: 4/5
